If your favorite activity is curling up on the couch and watching Times Talks, this new app may be for you.
Today, serial entrepreneur Fahad Khan is launching a mobile app that gives people access to roughly a dozen conferences that happen around the world. The app is just the latest manifestation Khan’s big plan to help brands earn money on otherwise free content.
The app, fittingly called The Conference, costs $5 and serves up content from a selection of conferences, including Milken Global, World Economic Forum, Aspen Ideas Festival, DLD, Fortune Brainstorm Tech, The Nantucket Project, Mobile World Congress, and Google Zeitgeist. The Conference boasts over 500 videos.
The Conference is already available on iOS and should hit Android and Windows Phones soon. Though the app typically charges a fee, it will be free until May 10.
Fahad Khan launched his video app company Tube Centrex at the beginning of this year. The company creates mobile apps for brands and personalities that use their existing video content. So instead of building one from scratch, a company might pay Tube Centrex to create a smartphone and tablet software that hooks into its YouTube channel.
The Conference is a variation on that same idea, though it uses content from multiple organizations and brands. The app takes free conference content from around the Web and houses it inside a paid app. Users could very well search online for any one of the conference talks available on The Conference and view it for free. But Khan thinks people will pay to have conference content served to them in app.
Throughout the course of this year, Khan hopes to build more than a hundred apps. In addition to brands, the Tube Centrex is making products that showcase the potential of its tech for different product markets.
Last month, the company launched Test Drive, which aggregates video from various car brands and turns itinto mobile app channels. In March, the company launched Product TV, which is sort of like a QVC for millennials (or Product Hunt for video). The mobile app enables companies to showcase videos of their products, so consumers can get virtually demo a product before buying it.
