Whale Trail is a vibrant arcade app for Android which sees a friendly sea creature take to the sky in order to avoid the dastardly clutches of an evil squid. It’s a wonderfully silly premise for an awesomely addictive app which combines rapid fire arcade fun with in depth challenges.
We often complain that innovation is stifled for the sake of familiarity on the Android Market but Whale Trail is proof that one needn’t be sacrificed to achieve the other. Heavily leaning on Tiny Wings’ concept of touchscreen assisted flight, you control Willow the Whale by pressing down send her to soaring upwards and letting go so she swoops down to the ocean.
The aim of the game is to stay up above the clouds and out of the grasp of Baron von Barry by collecting colourful little pellets which keep you fuelled up for flight. The more pellets you collect, the larger the high score you tally up with multiplier effects being added so long as you steer clear of some pesky lightning clouds.
Whale Trail would be an excellent app on the basis of its primary arcade format where you keep playing as long as possible in an effort to break your high score and breeze across as many of the game’s cartoon coloured backgrounds as possible.
What really marks this out as an excellent download however, is its short but sweet challenge levels where your goal is to collect as many points as possible in an agonisingly brief level layout. Although only 32 of these are included, with more promised to follow, they really detail the care and attention developers ustwo have lavished on their handsome creation.
Fiendishly compelling with a surprising amount of longevity, Whale Trail is a winner by any Android standard.
The Bottom Line
A stunningly creative blast of Android arcade fun.
