Smartphones are mobiles that offer much greater computing ability and connectivity than cheap mobiles. In fact a good way to understand them would be to view them as handheld computers that have been incorporated into a mobile phone. For example whilst some more advanced mobiles can run simple applications a Smartphone can run a complete operating system. There has been a steady growth in customer demand for mobiles that offer more powerful processing and memory capability together with a larger screen providing significant user benefits over those seen on the cheap mobile phones that were popular before. Fortunately this demand has increased provider competition which means that if you are looking for a new mobile phone there are now some good deals available. Pay as you go mobile phones have always provided good customer value and this sort of deal is now available for smartphones, some deals even provide a free phone whilst giving you a fixed price for texts and per minute for calls. Some plans are now very flexible and can be tailored to customer usage preferences. Some are even offering plans that give free extras, for example if you top up to £10 or over you can get free texts, web access or weekend calls. Mobile phones have come a long way from the cheap mobile phones or PDAs of the past and new mobiles offer some fantastic features: • Video calling is now available and works straight out of the box without the need for any complicated user set up and is easy to use. To start a video call all you need to do is select the entry from your contacts list and then press the video button. • HD video recording – the new iPhone will let you record and perform basic editing functions via the camera app including adding drama by including music and still shots. • Fast information – you can get access to maps, weather reports, news and travel updates. You can also send and receive vast quantities of data such as email attachments and data files from web sites. • Fast communication – web access with a new smart phone is now much quicker than on older mobiles and this makes it easier to get information from the net. With "always on" internet access is instant and you never need be out of touch which makes life much more productive for remote workers who need to stay in touch with their business. • Multitasking - third-party apps like Skype enable users to make voice calls over the internet. Mobiles which offer multitasking allow you to run Skype whilst other apps are running and switch between recently used apps without wasting time for the app to reload. This means that you can continue to Skype whilst checking email or even a restaurant site. All of this means that the switch from a regular mobile phone to a Smartphone makes a lot of sense, there are now a large number of manufacturers offering a huge range of phones but all blending the advantage of combining mobiles with a computer in a really light pocket sized unit.
