What is WiLD?
WiLD is a game created by Michel Ancel, the creator of Rayman, and developed by his company Wild Sheep. WiLD is a game that involves foraging, survival, hunting, exploration and tool making. WiLD was annnounced at Gamescom. It is an online survival adventure game, set 10,000 years ago. It is described by its creators as 'devoted to the wilderness' and 'when nature and humanity were one'.
Ancel claims that WiLD is as big as the continent of Europe, and contains dynamic weather and seasons to be enjoyed and endured by players as they explore the vast game world. WiLD is a PlayStation 4 exclusive. (See also: Just Cause 3 release date, UK price, formats, rumours.)
WiLD: why the PS4?
It seems unusual for an online role-playing game to be locked to a console. But the developers say it will take advantage of the PS4's 'crazy-sharing capabilities'.
One of the less reported updates from Gamescom was that of the PS4's 2.0 firmware update. One aspect of that update is 'Share Play'. This will allow you to play games over the internet, with any of your PlayStation Network friends: even if you don't own the game. You need a single copy of the game in question, running locally on just one system. Then the host system invites other member players, and streams the game to their consoles. This is pure speculation at this stage, but if WiLD supports this feature, you could jump into your friends' adventures and travel along with them around the game's world.
If Share Play sounds too good to be true there is a caveat. At this stage Sony will limit Share Play sessions to one hour each. But you could see how it would act as a great advert for WiLD, and allow you to play as yourself wherever you are. (See also: The Walking Dead: Season 3 video game release date & rumours.)
WiLD: what they say, and why you should care
On the PlayStation blog the developer says: "Every time you play you'll discover new things, even in the same place as before.
"But the best feature came from our prototyping phase when we started playing as wolves, horses, sheep [and] trout.
"In WiLD every creature should be playable, even the giant and dangerous ones. All these features combined, open so many new gameplay situations, especially when playing online. How you approach the game is up to you, what you do and even what you are."
Excited yet? The Ancel signs off by saying:
"It's early days still, so that's all we can tell you at the moment but make sure you check out our video and see what you think for yourselves. We hope you like it, and we can't wait to tell you more soon."
