Samsung’s next generation flagship phablet may only be a few hours away from its official unveiling later on Thursday, but leaks are still trickling out about some of its alleged features. A leak out of China now claims that the dual-SIM version of the smartphone will indeed have a microSD card slot for capacity expansion. In fact, if the leaked image is to be believed, the second SIM slot will actually be a hybrid slot that will double up as the microSD slot. The idea of hybrid slots was originally adopted by USB dongles (Data Cards) which very often double up as memory card readers. Those devices generally come with just a single slot that accepts both a SIM card as well as a microSD card. Lots of smartphones in recent times have started taking the hint and turning their secondary SIM slots into hybrid slots that double up as memory card slots.
From the image available to us courtesy of ePrice, the dual SIM slots seem to be positioned towards the bottom of the left-side of the smartphone, with its screen facing up. That’s presumably because the space on the right side will be taken up by the S-Pen stylus that Samsung is expected to ship with the device. There have been a lot of speculations over the past few weeks about whether Samsung will include an external memory slot with the Galaxy Note 5, and there have been suggestions that the dual SIM version might come with the feature, while the single SIM version might give it a miss. While the latest info doesn’t say anything specific about the single SIM edition of the handset, given the dual-purpose hybrid nature of the memory card slot, it seems unlikely that the feature will be present in the single-SIM version as well.
We’ll get a clearer idea about the exact specifications of the Galaxy Note 5 fairly shortly, as Samsung is expected to announce the device at its ‘Unpacked’ event scheduled to be held in New York City on Thursday morning at 11 (EST). The device is expected to feature a fingerprint scanner and Quick Charge technology. Samsung is also expected to announce the Galaxy S6 Edge+ alongside the Note 5 during the event.
