Who’s peekin’ out from under a stairway, calling a name that’s lighter than air, who’s bending down to give me a rainbow? Everyone knows it’s Windy, and now there’s a brand new Windy app that has nothing to do with The Association, but truly does bring wind to life. Windy comes from the makers of Thunderspace, and offers a similar idea in providing ornate soundscapes to listen to, while this time focusing on the wind. You’re given six different natural wind recordings, all recorded with stereoscopic 3D to be optimized for it to sound like the wind is all around you.
The wind sounds so authentic to the point that it sounds like it’s blowing on either side of you, up above, all with varying pitch. Closing your eyes, and listening to the sound can make you feel like there’s a gusty wind actually around you, short of the air actually whipping you in the face. Each track is also quite lengthy with a lot of variation during the recording, and the surround sound style makes it feel that much more varied. All of the audio is a perfect backdrop to help you either relax, study, sleep, or meditate with the wind offering a soothing, yet alternating sound to quiet down the other distractions in your head. Part of the enjoyment of the app is just getting lost in the audio, no matter what you’re doing, as there’s so much depth to appreciate. Also, please use the app with headphones, or not at all.
In addition to the ornate audio tracks, there are also six different artistic scenes to go along with the different wind types. Whether it’s wind through the trees in a forest, on the desert floor, or up in the mountains, the scene and wind match up nicely. There’s also a parallax effect applied to each scene to give you some motion, and that’s not all. Each scene is accented by a storyline with six different chapters to read through to give a little more life to the wind, and scenes. There’s just so much to appreciate in the app, and it’s provided through a slick interface with swipe gestures, simplified menu buttons, and translucent reading backdrops.
Windy ($1.99, Universal) is an absolute joy to listen to accentuated by valuable art, and text to create an immersive app experience that make this a should buy.
