Humour is a complex thing; whilst scenes of slapstick may be the most rib-tickling to some, only the intellectual humour of, say, Woody Allen, will raise a wry smile for others. But if there’s one thing all humans – and chimps, according to the recent research – find funny its watching someone fall over. Welcome to Wipeout…
In the US of America, Wipeout is broadcast on ABC, presented by the immaculately toothed twosome of Bob Bobson and John Johnson and the winner receives a million dollars, probably. Here in the UK, meanwhile, it’s known as Total Wipeout, presented by that small bloke from Top Gear and the easy on the eye Amanda Byram, and the winner gets £10,000. It’s also the richest vein of televised human humiliation you can tap, as bombastic contestant after contestant slips, misses, gets hit, bounces off or just face-plants from a great height into water or mud in some of the least dignified manners imaginable; and it’s hilarious. So an app equivalent was long overdue.
So how does a digital rendering of a programme whose sole purpose is to point a finger of fun at someone else’s real-life suffering hold up? Surprisingly well, as it happens. For a start, rather than try and make it look overly clever, the devs have gone for a cartoon character approach; which given the personalities of most of the real contestants is more than fitting. All the obstacles that make the show a treat for the sofa bound are present and correct – the Big Red Balls, Topple Tower, and that one with the tilty platform things – so its basic, but its all there.
Relatively easy to operate in a jump-and-hope style, there’s not much to be done once you’re in mid-air and, yes, aimed more at fun than physics, the resulting reactions as face meets obstacle are designed to entertain rather than look realistic – which is what Wipeout is all about.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Fun even without the slow-mo faces of impending doom donned by the real contestants on TV, there are plenty of modes to tackle, achievements to attain and points aplenty for wiping out in style, so forget the physics and embrace the idiotic!
