Alice has just had her phone stolen by the white rabbit, and now she’s ready to chase it in the new mini-golf adventure, Wonder Golf. Wonderland makes for a great mini-golf setting because there are so many oddities, whether you’re in the dark forest, chess fields, or palace. Each of the 70 levels presents a finely crafted obstacle course to roll Alice through. You’re presented with spring pads, speed boosts, mirror portals, collectible gems, moving platforms, and odd layouts to present unique challenges as you go. There are two types of levels with either a limited number of moves, or a limited amount of time, and each one changes your strategy.
There are tons of mini-golf games on iOS, but none truly stand-out, which helps Wonder Golf be that much more appealing. The game uses a mini-golf mechanic, but is more of an adventure game as you try to get the perfect shot while using the environment to your advantage. It’s a bit like Crytek’s Fibble in rolling a character through action packed layouts while trying to trigger specific areas. In the case of Wonder Golf, there’s a surprising amount of variety as the new environments are constantly interspersed, and each level introduces a unique challenge. The levels aren’t the most complex, or long, but there are still well designed for unique obstacles to send your way. One challenge is that you need to collect a key to unlock the whole before rolling in. There’s also a hidden cheshire cat in some levels to unlock bonus challenges.
The theme helps get to download the game, but the gameplay is what keeps you coming back. The levels flow together, so that you’re always ready for one more, and they’re just balanced nicely to appeal to all ages. It’s neat to view the level as a whole, and then to focus on the individual forking pathways to maneuver down with your limited number of shots, or time. The main challenge comes from aiming for three stars, and you’re given an expansive Candy Crush style map to unlock. Wonder Golf is free to play, and also uses a in-app purchase system similar to Candy Crush with hearts that deplete on failure, the ability to spend more time on a hole, or replay shots. It’s all optional to let you keep playing Wonder Golf for free, and there’s a lot to enjoy.
Wonder Golf (Free, Universal) is a quality adventure game that takes full advantage of the Wonderland theme, and mini-golf style to make it worth picking up.
