Confident in your circumlocutory accomplishment? Proud of the velocity of you verbosity? Lexicon legerity at the centre of your language life? Then have we got an app for you: Words Rumble! It was a rhetorical question, by the way…
Whilst brain-training games seemed to fall out of fashion almost as quickly as they fell in, Words Rumble gives you all the Lycra-clad mind-flex of any other cerebral gym without bothering you with tedious graphs about how old your head is. Presented with a random grid, all you have to do is slide your finger over adjacent letters to form as many words as you can, in as little time as possible. The faster your frontal lobe and finger are against the clock, the more points you gain, pushing you ever further up the leader-board until you become King of Words on the app’s ‘Stephen Fry’ level. I may have made the ‘King’ and ‘Fry’ bits up…
THE BOTTOM LINE
Essentially an app to take the place of all those puzzle books people used to weigh themselves down with on long journeys, the principle of the game is as basic as the interface, but if you like to challenge yourself in the arena of mental combat, mano-a-machino, you’ll love it… even when time is up and it shows you all the, now obvious, words you missed!
According to the developers a multiplayer version where you’ll be able to take on friends in a war or word-searching is also currently in the pipeline, something which should propel Words Rumble to whole new Words With Friends and Scramble With Friends-esque levels. Until then, don’t attempt any circumnavigation of the globe without it.
