Look for the bear necessities, the simple near necessities… when you wish upon a star… it’s the circle, the circle of life… Salagadoola mechicka boola bibbidi-bobbidi-boo – Put ’em together and what have you got? Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo! Blimey, sorry – I seem to have suffered a bit of a Disney spell…
Okay poor pun pay-offs aside, there can be few people out there still unaware of Disney’s latest on-coming animated, soon to be omnipresent, adventure, Wreck-it Ralph; and if you are, prepare to receive an excellent 8-bit style education. Based on the movie’s tale of arcade games gone awry, bored of being the bad guy Ralph runs amok, hopping between games and machines in a bid to prove he can be the hero… and as a consequence we get an app that lets us hop between gaming genres too, which is always good.
Starting off with the Donkey Kong-esque stylings of Fix-it Felix Jr (Ralph’s good-guy opposition), it’s an old school hop and dodge race to stop Ralph’s rampage wrecking everything and then, provided you can master those moves, you unlock two more equally of-their-era games in the form of the tilt-timing jet-pack racer, Sugar Rush, and the cy-bug blasting shoot ’em up, Hero’s Duty.
A trilogy of classic arcade gaming revived by Disney’s devs, Wreck-it Ralph works nicely on the nostalgic level for kids who never grew up and, as they’re all relatively easy to play – and being Disney, utterly inoffensive – fun too for the kids of the kids who never grew up.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Despite some teething problems reported with certain devices, once you’re up and running this app is more fun than a barrel full of apple-poisoned dwarves. And with a fourth game to be added via an update, they’ll be even more zip-a-dee-doo-dah and chim-chim-chimeree than you can handle. Sorry, it’s happening again…
