Unfazed by Sony’s business model of releasing games in retail and digital form on day one, Microsoft has reaffirmed its faith in its Games on Demand release schedule.
Speaking to MCV, Xbox Live’s UK product manager Pav Bhardwaj says that Microsoft will continue to release Games on Demand titles roughly six months after their initial retail release dates.
“It comes down to choice,” said Bhardwaj. “The customer has the choice of going to retail on day one if they really want to buy a particular title, or to wait a couple of months and buy it full price from the Xbox Live marketplace.”
While one would think that prohibiting players from having the option to digitally purchase a game on day one is not much of a “choice,” Bhardwaj remained adamant in the success of Microsoft’s policy.
“It’s a successful part of our business; we’re very pleased with the growth and it continues to do really well. Clearly there’s an audience out there who are happy to purchase a product at full ERP six or so months after [its retail release].”
While by no means a source of outrage for most Xbox owners, the digital delay has been held by many as something of an annoyance for a good while now.
Even still, Bhardwaj firmly believes in continuing to support retail.
“We don’t do Games on Demand on day one, we focus on boxed retail for day one. That’s where our focus has always been and will remain that way for the foreseeable future.”
