The PlayStation 4 might’ve dominated the holiday season, but that doesn’t mean Microsoft didn’t make money. In a post to the Xbox Wire, Marketing VP Mike Nichols doled out some statistics Microsoft can boast about for 2015.
December 28, Nichols wrote, had more gamers on Xbox Live than any day in Xbox history, and he says the Xbox One continues to outpace the Xbox 360 at the same time in its lifespan. All of the big fall exclusives – Halo 5, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Forza Motorsport 6, and Gears of War: Ultimate Edition – sold over 1 million copies, and Microsoft Studios in particular had twice as many players on their games as last year.
The Xbox One saw 200 new features added and more than 350 games releases including self-published ID@Xbox games and backwards compatible titles. It’s hard to tell just how big backwards compatibility is for any given system, but the Xbox One has seen 15 million hours of Xbox 360 games played since the feature rolled out in early November. Windows 10 gamers have also streamed 6.6 million hours of Xbox One games to their PCs as well.

Microsoft has made the decision not to announce sales numbers anymore – they’re clearly in second place, and focusing on how badly they’re losing isn’t going to help them – so don’t expect hard numbers like we’re getting out of Sony; but, even in second place they’re continuing to grow, which is good for the brand and for Xbox gamers.
