Plenty of interesting sales stats from Japan earlier this month via research firm Media Create.
The combined phenomenon of Japan’s growing disinterest in high end consoles and seemingly inherent ability to play nicely with Microsoft has taken the Xbox brand name to an all time low. According to 4Gamer, the Xbox One console sold a mere 100 units from the week of June 8 to June 14.
Despite their struggles, neither the Xbox nor the Xbox 360 performed as poorly as this. The PlayStation 3 eclipsed it at 2,633 units and even the original and outdated Nintendo 3DS model managed 943 units over the same time period. Some were hoping that the exclusive Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness would help its situation, but the boost that visual novel brought to the Xbox One wasn’t long lived.
What else lies beyond the horizon? Maybe Keiji Inafune’s ReCore and Hideki Kamiya’s Scalebound will be able to succeed on the name recognition of their developers, but adults who played their games when they were younger have grown into folks who probably don’t have time to game on a home console anymore.
Don’t look now, either, but the Wii U also outsold the PlayStation 4 mostly because Splatoon has been huge in Japan. Nintendo’s bright and colorful shooter has been all over the place, and the gaming crowd is really buying into it. We’ll see how that holds up in 2016 as Dragon Quest XI and the Final Fantasy VII Remake come closer to a reality, but in the grand scheme of things, Japan continues to defy the rest of the world with its own gaming trends.
