Xiaomi has launched their latest flagship iteration, the Mi 5, and it is what we expected, as per the recent leaks. Showcased ahead of the MWC launch in Barcelona, Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi has introduced three variants of the Mi 5. All would be powered by Snapdragon 820 Chipset, but will sport different RAM and storage.
The first variant priced at 1999 Yuan would be clocking SD 820 at 1.8GHz while packing 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. The second variant is priced at 2299 Yuan and will have SD 820 clocking at 2.15GHz and pack 3GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage options. While the highest variant would sport a 4GB of RAM and 128GB internal storage with SD 820 (2.15GHz) processor, priced at 2699 Yuan.
On the software front, it would be coming up with MIUI 7 based on the Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS, expect a lot of software enhancements as it would be the first MIUI ROM with Marshmallow as its base. Sporting a 5.15-inch 1080p display with curved glass and 600 nits of brightness level, it isn’t what was expected of the display. We hoped to see a 2K Display in action here.
The camera package on this thing includes 16-megapixel Sony Exmor IMX298 sensor, which is also available on the Huawei Mate 8 and it is considered the most powerful image sensor for smartphone yet. The rear camera is aided by 4-Axis, OIS (Optical Image Stabilization), PDAF (Phase Detection Autofocus) and dual-LED Flash. On the front is a 4-megapixel image sensor with 2-micron pixel size.
Here are some of the camera samples from Xiaomi Mi 5, shared by brand:
The fingerprint sensor is placed on the physical button, which is quite similar to the Galaxy smartphones. And this is the first Mi phone with a fingerprint sensor on the front, which where I like to prefer it. So, I guess, Mi 5, you and I are going to get along just fine. Measuring at 7.25mm thickness, it isn’t the sleekest design, but with its small screen size, it should be easy to the hand. It weighs at 129 grams.
Regarding connectivity options, it comes with 4G LTE network support with VoLTE, voice over LTE feature. It would be boasting dual-SIM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, GPS and USB Type-C port. The battery capacity on this latest flagship from Xiaomi is at 3000mAh, which will support Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0. The Mi 5 will come in four color finishes; White, Black, Gold and Rose.
