Some Sony Xperia devices of yesteryear, used to suffer from thermal issues, which meant that these phones could easily overheat. In particular, features such as 4K video recording felt like a novelty on older Xperia devices, only lasting minutes before shutting down due to overheating.
Youtube user Phone Battles wanted to test just how far Sony has come in this record, by testing the 4K recording features of Sony’s latest phones (Xperia XZ Premium, XZs and XZ), against some of the older generations (Xperia Z5, Z5 Premium Z3+, Z3v and M5).
The Sony Xperia XZ Premium is a great all-round device, and the results of the video shouldn’t surprise you. Sony has done a fantastic job with the thermal performance, easily outlasting all previous devices by a considerable margin. In fact, for the first test, the Xperia XZ Premium was manually stopped as it kept going (past 2 hours and 30 minutes), while in the second test it lasted the longest before running out of storage space.
If you’re interested in how the other handsets performed, basically the newest phones lasted the longest, showing that Sony has made step-by-step progress when it comes to thermal performance. The 4K video recording times that each phone lasted are as below (this was for the second test conducted of moving images, rather than just a black screen):
1) Xperia XZ Premium: 1 hr 42 mins 37 seconds (phone ran out of storage)
2) Xperia XZs: 48 mins 32 seconds
3) Xperia XZ: 39 mins 42 seconds
4) Xperia Z5: 32 mins 07 seconds
5) Xperia Z5 Premium: 16 mins 19 seconds
6) Xperia M5: 10 mins 23 seconds
7) Xperia Z3+: 6 mins 16 seconds
8) Xperia Z3v: 2 mins 55 seconds
