XSEED continues to work the magic of its localization skills with the PSP remake of the SNES cult-classic Brandish. It’s been five years since the game first released in Japan under the banner of Brandish: The Dark Revenant, but here we are in 2015 getting a brand new PSP game for our PlayStation Vitas! Ridiculous, I know!
Brandish: The Dark Revenant was created by Ys and The Legend of Heroes developer Nihon Falcom. The Super Nintendo version was released in the States back in 1995, and its extremely late release is the most likely culprit as to why the game doesn’t have more fans. It is heavily stooped in overhead dungeon-crawling mechanics similar to those found in a rougelike, and its graphics are a relic when put next to competition from that year like a little game called Chrono Trigger.
I won’t knock its excellent 80′s anime inspired cutscenes though, something that Falcom has always been very top-of-the-line with. The PSP remake is crammed with them, and it seems to make more than enough improvements to the original formula.
I’m not familiar with any of its sequels or the PSP remake, but if XSEED is going to great lengths to bring us a five-year-old video game, then it might be a pleasant surprise. The company has always had a penchant for finding fun and obscure JRPG’s in between its fan-service games.
No specific release for brandish yet, but XSEED claims it is aiming for an early January release. With this out of the way, maybe it will have time for The Legend of Legacy next! Let’s hope so. I don’t think my heart can take it if the company sinks its wonderful localization talent into another Senran Kagura game.
