A bit of a tricky situation here. But it appears that LG’s latest flagship, the LG G4 does not support Quick Charge 2.0. Normally, that’d be no big deal right? Well here’s the interesting part. If you look on Qualcomm’s site, you’ll notice that the Snapdragon 808 does support Quick Charge 2.0. And since the LG G4 does run on the Snapdragon 808, many assumed it support Quick Charge 2.0. However, that is not the case. We used an app called Ampere (Available on the Play Store) to find out for ourselves. Using a Quick Charger, the LG G4 was charging at a rate of 90mA. Much slower than the HTC One M9’s rate of around 900mA.
We spoke with Qualcomm about it, as this is a bit confusing. And basically the skinny is that LG decided not to add Quick Charge 2.0 into the LG G4. Not this could be to cut down costs, especially with the leather backs costing more than the traditional plastic of even metal. However, we did learn that there will be a folio case available from LG that will support Quick Charging 2.0. So that’s likely the real reason why there’s no Quick Charging 2.0 in the LG G4, so they can sell the folio case. As soon as the folio case is available, however, we’ll be sure to grab one and check it out.
As some of you know, or may not know. Manufacturers can choose to enable certain features on processors or not. Quick Charge is one of those features, obviously. There are many others, like the Immersive Audio that is in the Snapdragon 810. That was not part of the LG G Flex 2 (likely because it doesn’t use front-facing speakers like the HTC One M9 does). So this is pretty much all on LG, and not Qualcomm this time. However, we do have Qi Wireless Charging, but only after you buy the replacement back. I wonder if the leather back will use Qi charging? I’m sure it’ll get really hot, as wireless charging tends to do.
So there you have it. No Quick Charge 2.0 on the LG G4. We’ll assume that LG decided to leave it out since we have a removable battery this time around. We’ve reached out to LG for comment, and will update this post as soon as we hear back from them.
