There’s no better experience than sitting down with your favourite magazine and reading through a whole issue of detailed articles and immaculate design, except perhaps grabbing some spare time with your Android tablet. If only there was a way to combine the two… What’s that you cry? ‘Try Zinio, the best newsstand app available for Google’s portable OS.’ Well, if you insist.
Though you’re not presented with a humongous array of free articles and magazines to get a taste for Zinio, there’s enough to be getting on with. We read a great tribute to Amy Winehouse by the NME and a sterling Colin Farrell interview by Esquire for starters but if you’re more into fashion or even nautical pursuits, you’ll find something worth your while. As for the paid for magazines, almost every major title is covered with different editions for different territories. So if you want to download all the international incarnations of Autocar, you can.
Reading your magazine of choice is a mostly pleasant affair bar one key bug. Every time you move around a page, the screen re-renders itself meaning a small pause in the reading experience. Why the app doesn’t focus the whole page at the first zoom, even the bits you can’t see, is beyond us but crucially it doesn’t spoil Zinio or even compel us to stop using it.
For some people, Zinio won’t beat the experience you’d get with a paper magazine. For others, its convenience will outweigh its flaws. Bearing in mind this is an e-reader app which will only get better, we’re impressed with what we’ve seen here. More than any other e-reader app, Zinio seems to have the most proficient idea of how to get you to commit to some serious reading time on an Android tablet.
The Bottom Line
The best e-reader for Android, a good looking app that’s sadly not without its flaws. Additional Info
Requires Android 2.2 or higher
