There are enough zombie games on the Android Market to sink a battleship and most of them aren’t particularly dissimilar. Zombie Dash is an arcade survival app where your high score is dictated by the distance you can keep running into wave after wave of the undead. It’s okay for brief bursts of procrastination but suffers under long stints of play.
Zombie Dash has accumulated 5,000,000 to 10,000,000 Android Market downloads for a reason. Like all spectacularly popular apps, it’s extremely easy to play and an average run through lasts for three minutes tops.
Pick up and play fun is the aim of the game here and its control system is designed for exactly this purpose. You have one button to jump and one button to shoot. Any movement is done automatically for you just to make things absolutely idiot proof.
It’s because of this simplicity that we find it hard to really engage with Zombie Dash. The only real variation in gameplay you’ll experience is in the weapons you can use to blast your enemies into oblivion with machines guns, laser guns, jet packs and an armoured robot suit all included.
Compared to Plants vs Zombies, Zombieville USA and Age Of Zombies however, Zombie Dash quickly becomes stilted and a little bit dull. If we had to put our finger on why? We’d say it’s far too easy. The zombies always die in one hit and you can usually shoot them from halway across the screen. Plus, you’ll never fall through the gaps between platforms because they’re just to small.
So despite its bright cartoon graphics and immediately enticing charms, Zombie Dash lacks much longevity it desperately needs. This app may be winning the short sprint for downloads but in the marathon for repeated plays, it falls within the first 400 metres.
The Bottom Line
An enticing but unfulfilling free download that proves zombie carnage can be tiresome.
