Jelly Bean Source Released!

Well lookie lookie, just within the last few hours of the internet, our beloved Jean-Baptiste Queru, the leader behind all things AOSP, has announced that Android OS version 4.1.x (Jellybean) is headed to AOSP, the Android Open Source Project, right now. He sent the code along with this statement:

We’re releasing Android 4.1 in AOSP today.

The name of the tagged release is android-4.1.1_r1.

The name of the development branch is jb-dev.

We recommend that you create new clients, even if you’re working in
the master branch. It’ll make your clients smaller and faster to sync.

Proprietary binaries are available for Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus. Nexus
S and Xoom will follow.

As you can see this is not a test, this is not a drill. Source is out, as stated by JBQ, and you can clearly see that Google will only be “fully” supporting their Experience devices: the Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S and Xoom. Also, just because Jellybean has been released to source, don’t expect to receive and updates just yet. Releasing a code to source just means that anyone can pull it and build a ROM for devices using the actually code that Google used in building the device. One thing you may notice is that the code released is for Android 4.1.1, which is an updated build than what was released at I/O.

If you’re a developer or just wanting to get your hands on this code you can download it HERE. For all others just sit back and wait, I can’t imagine it taking long for these ROMs and mods to come out.

Earlier when writing this story, the Jellybean code wasn’t available to be downloaded just yet due to the repository required to download the code hadn’t been synced yet. Well the repo is updated and the code is available to all. Have fun building ROMs.
